About Mactra Shop Equipment & Fittings Ltd

MacDonald Trading was started in 1991 by Jim & Ann MacDonald. In the recession of this time there was a need for a supplier of low cost used shopfittings for retailers starting out or making changes to their shops. There was also a ready supply of equipment from unfortunate retailers closing down. The business developed quickly and as the nation's wealth improved so did the demand for new shopfittings. The name was changed to Mactra Shop Equipment & Fittings to give potential customers a better idea of what we did. Trevor Churchill joined the company as a consultant in 1994. With him he brought drawing and shop planning skills. Trevor & Jim designed the shops and Jim fitted them.

The late 1990's saw a change in the company's direction into the design and installation of purpose built display stands for leading UK brands such as Unilever , Bestfoods, Allied Bakeries and Entenmann's Cakes. Mactra continued to fit shops during this period.

In the early 2000s Mactra had display stands in nearly every supermarket in the UK. Changes to store policy of the 'big four' supermarkets meant the demand for 'off shelf ' displays disappeared and Mactra returned to concentrating on its core business of designing and fitting stores for the independent sector.

Since 2002 Mactra have been working with Landmark and their suppliers, household names: Walkers Crisps, Glaxo Smithcline, Coors Breweries, Cadbury's, Gallahers, Scottish & Newcastle to regenerate independent stores throughout the United Kingdom. Over 500 stores a year are converted to the Lifestyle Express and Lifestyle Drinks Express symbol groups. This involves working with retailers, redesigning their stores to get the best in terms of space use and to maximise turnover & profits. This is often done within a strict budget. Uplifts in sales are regularly reported by retailers after the Hothouse program of which Mactra play an important part.

In recent years Mactra have become Plunkett Approved suppliers working with local community shops to develop their community space with a Post Office shop and cafe. This has been in addition to working with Wholesalers like Booker, Bestway & Costcutter to name a few.

Mactra have been Post Office approved for over a decade now and continue to work with Local, Mains & Community Branch Post offices. Trevor Churchill developed this relationship and Liz MacDonald has continued to stay up to date on all Post Office updates since 2013.
