Katadyn
Watermakers
Introduction
Mactra Marine are authorised dealers for Katadyn Watermakers
and their associated products. Katadyn make the smallest hand
operated and low power draw watermakers in the world.
The Katadyn Watermaker range is used by armed forces around
the world and is built for harsh environments where reliability
is a matter of life and death. The hand operated watermaker
units 06 Survivor and 35 Survivor are ideal for liferafts
and grab bags, Whilst the 40E Survivor watermaker is suited
to small yachts or ocean rowing boats. Although it is electric
it comes with a handle to allow its use manually.
Jim MacDonald of Mactra said ‘ With the introduction of the
Katadyn products into our range of watermakers, Mactra Marine
are able to supply a range of watermakers from the Survivor
06 which produces just under a litre an hour by hand to 210
litres an hour with the Schenker Watermakers M210 machine.
I believe that there is no other company in the UK offering
such a range of watermakers to sailors and adventurers’
KATADYN'S PATENTED ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEM
The Katadyn Energy Recovery system takes advantage of stored
energy in the high pressure reject water that is typically
wasted. The pressurized reject water is recirculated to the
back side of the piston to aid the next stroke. This energy
is kept in the system, resulting in less work to achieve fresh
water.
REVERSE OSMOSIS EXPLAINED
To remove dissolved salts from seawater with reverse osmosis,
part of the salt water is filtered through a semipermeable
membrane. Only 10% of the water passes through the membrane.
The remaining 90% flow past the membrane and at the same time
cleans the membrane (self-cleaning effect). The small size
of the "membrane pores" ensures extremely pure drinking
water, but extremely high pressures must be generated - normally
55 bar. Reverse osmosis is used worldwide to obtain drinking
water, e.g. in the semi-conductor industry and in medicine.
